The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Sciences at the Central University of Jammu was established in 2016 with the introduction of five-year Integrated B.Sc.(Hons.)-M.Sc. Chemistry program. The UGC recommended Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) has been implemented since the inception of the department. This course has an option of exit after completing three years with B.Sc.(Hons.) degree. The Ph.D. program in Chemistry was started in 2018-19 academic session. The current faculty members are highly experienced and qualified in various specialized areas of chemistry such as Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Green Chemistry, Catalysis, Coordination Chemistry, Bioinorganic Chemistry, Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry. The department has received 09 externally funded projects so far from funding agencies including DST-SERB, DRDO and UGC with a total cost of ~Rs.3.52 crores, which acquiesce high quality research. The Department has also received DST-FIST grant of Rs.2.43 crores in 2023. Several national and international research collaborations by the faculty members lead to research of international standard. The department consists of appropriate student-teacher ratio and state-of-the-art laboratories with modern experimental facilities. The diverse areas of specialization of faculty members, self-motivated students and high standard teaching-laboratory facilities are the crux of the department. The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Sciences is committed to education, research and training for students to acquire in-depth knowledge of the fundamental principles of the subject of chemistry, scientific aspects of chemical processes and directs them towards the application of knowledge in real life problems. In this short span of time, the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Sciences is being hailed as an important part of the Central University of Jammu, as the department strives to achieve success in its journey.
